Cat Health: Special Diets

Cat Health: Special Diets

Cat Eating a Meal

Hungry Cat

We love our cats.  We even think of them as part of the family and call them our “fur-babies” and “fur-kids”.  And, like our children, we will do what it takes to make sure they live happy, healthy lives.

I got my fur-baby from the Humane Society, and for the first 6 years everything was fine.  Then, she came down very sick and had to have a lot of veterinary care.  It turned out she had struvite crystals and had to have them removed from her little bladder.  Poor thing!

The veterinarian suggested several different brands and types of foods that she would need to stay healthy.  Unfortunately, as lovely as she is, she is one of the pickiest eaters in cat-dom.

Doing research on the Web, I found a special struvite diet sold by Wysong.  I put her on that, and she has been doing well with no recurrence of those glass-like shard crystals in her poor little bladder.

When I find a really good product, I want to share it.  That is one of the reasons I started this website in the first place.  I have found the Wysong foods to be great for my cat.  They even make vitamins and supplements for people, and I have found those to be great for me, too!

Right now, Wysong is having a special sale for 15% off.  This is a great opportunity and I wanted to let you know.  Even if you are not looking for a special diet for your pet — even if you are looking for diet bars for yourself — you can get great ones from Wysong!

Cat Facts: Black Cats

Cat Facts: Black Cats

I found a great quote:

“A black cat crossing your path signifies that the animal is going somewhere.” – Groucho Marx

Black Cat

Most people either love black cats or hate them, some to the point of phobia.

In the Middle Ages, cats, especially black cats, were thought to be connected to witchcraft and the devil.  Some people still believe the old folklore about having bad luck after having a black cat cross your path.  That is why Groucho Marx’s line is so funny — this old folkore still hangs on in the public consciousness.

Other people absolutely love having a black cat.  They have shared stories that they think that black cats are special.  Some owners say that they think that the “black cat” thinks it is “special.”  And they find looking at a black cat at night and seeing just the eyes is deliciously spooky.

We all have reasons for loving our cats.  It’s a good thing that the bad rap black cats have gotten in the past is fading and the love for our feline friends is including them, too.

If you have a black cat, we would love to have you share a picture and a reason why you love it.

Cat Health: FIP

Tabitha, in memory

Tabitha

This is a picture of Tabitha. What a sweet little kitty!

Unfortunately, little Tabitha’s life was cut short by FIP.

FIP is short for feline infectious peritonitis.  This is a viral infection that usually develops in kittens, although it can strike cats at any age. There is no treatment and no cure.

It is caused by a mutation of a virus called feline coronavirus. Most of the time, this virus does not hurt the cat, like us having a cold. However, sometimes, and no one knows why, it can develop into FIP.  In about 5-10% of infected cats, the virus attacks the white blood cells and then spreads through the body, causing inflammation and eventually death.

A research fund has been set up for donations to the Bria Fund to help pay for research into the cause and treatment of FIP.  Those of us who love kitties know that we want to help them love good and long lives.

Cat Health: What If They Can’t Diagnose Your Cat?

Michie the Cat

Sickly Michie

I have been slow to add posts lately.  My darling little kitty has come down very sick.  She has been to the regular vet almost every day and referred to a specialist pet clinic for diagnosis.

After an ultrasound and going over her symptoms, they cannot be sure whether she has pancreatitis or lymphoma.  I just wrote a post about lymphoma a little over a month ago, never dreaming that within a month my own cat would be showing the symptoms and perhaps have the same diagnosis.  It is one thing to do research on cat health and quite another to have a very sick pet on your hands.

The doctors are doing their best and are trying every therapy they can think of.  It is unfortunate that cats, like babies, cannot tell us where they hurt.  When I wrote the article about lymphoma, all the information I read about it said that your cat could be treated with chemotherapy like humans.  Now that I see my little furry one throwing up every day and getting weaker and weaker with whatever is wrong with her, I cannot believe that subjecting her to chemotherapy would be a good thing to do as her owner and protector.

If anyone else has any experience with feline lymphoma, your comments would be appreciated.  Thank you.
